Now, more than ever, it makes sense to stay fit and healthy. We know that certain health conditions and
living situations can place you at a much higher likelihood of contracting potentially life threatening diseases.
The good news is that it isn't too late to improve your health and your chances of living well, longer.
You can end up on the floor either by accident or on purpose.
If you find that you can't get up by yourself, you are at risk of losing your independence.
That's when people often start thinking about needing to move to some kind of assistive living facility.
The main thing that prevents people from being able to get up from the floor is weak muscles in the hips and thighs.
* It is important that you have someone with you, standing by, to make sure you don't lose your balance. If you would like us to help you, click on the link on this page to schedule your Free Healthy Aging Analysis.
1. Quadriceps Strength
Sit in a comfortable chair. Straighten one leg out in front. Attempt to stand just using the other leg, no hands. If you are unable to stand without using your hands or the other leg, you may not be strong enough to be able to get up from the ground. Test on each foot.
2. Hip Strength
Stand facing a wall with someone standing behind you. Lift one foot off the floor, trying to keep your pelvis level and not leaning to either side. You can lightly touch the wall to keep your balance. Hold this position for 30 seconds. Then try with the other leg.
If your pelvis doesn't stay level or if you lean to either side, you probably have hip weakness. This could prevent you from being able to get up from the floor by yourself.
